Some kids look up to TV superhero’s, some look up to their parents, some little girls, full of innocence and love look up to the local garbage man. One little girl from Bloomington Indiana proves that you can find a hero in anyone and sometimes the more you find out about people who appear to be average, every day Joes truly are great heroes in this world for no other reason than being a hero in someone else’s world.
In little Brooklyn’s world the local garbage man is her hero. His name is Dopson and every Thursday she looks forward to being able to wave to him. After many days of many happy waves, little blonde Brooklyn had her wave exchange develop into something truly exceptional.
Brooklyn’s mother, Traci Andracke, says that Brooklyn’s favorite day of the week is Thursday because it is garbage day and she gets to wave to hello to her best friend in the garbage truck. It has already been almost a year since they started their wave exchange. “She has anxiously awaited the garbage truck's arrival at our house. It started with waving from the window, then we had to try and be outside to wave, and when we missed the truck driving by the house, I'd drive around the neighborhood to find the garbage truck and wave... on our way out the door in the mornings. Every... Thursday, my heart is full when I see the joy that our amazing garbage man brings Brooklyn when he honks and waves at her with a BIG smile.”
Now finally, after a year of establishing a friendly relationship based on a simple wave, the two got to meet; Brooklyn got to meet her hero! Brooklyn had her birthday and decided to keep one of her birthday cupcakes for her friend Dopson the garbage man. Both Brooklyn and her mother went to the corner of the street and after waving, like usual, Traci motioned for him to come over to them. He parked his truck, got out and while wearing his trademark big smile he accepted a cupcake from little Brooklyn. “Brooklyn was instantly speechless as she handed him the cup cake.” Traci explained to Dopson how important he was to their Thursdays and that they both appreciate the waving, honking and of course big bright smile.
'Then he explained that he looks forward to seeing us every Thursday as well. He said that he has a meeting every Thursday morning and always tries to get out of there in a hurry so that he can make sure to see us every week. He said he doesn't have any kids of his own, but he mentors several children and just loves them. I can't believe that I never got his name, so for now he will continue to be 'our favorite awesome smiley garbage man.'
Sometimes it takes a little girl to remind us of the kindness of strangers
