The Impossible EM Drive Might Work

A new hypothesis has been presented, trying to explain how the EM Drive works. The study will be able to reduce the controversies surrounding the EM Drive. This new study was published in the AIP Advances. The study was done by researchers from Finland. The researchers noted that the EM Drive is not capable of violating the third law of dynamics, because it is not a true propeller-less engine. Microwave protons are injected into the engine, they in turn, pair with photons that are out of phase, and the photons are found in the cavity. The two then create interference between each other. The waves are then capable of causing interference that is destructive. This is caused when a wave’s valley are aligned to the valleys and peaks of another wave. The energy of the waves will still be propagated but then there is a possibility of the waves cancelling each other. 

According to Arto Annila a coauthor in the study, the EM Drive is just like any other engine. They use general principles in determining all these.The EM Drive is able to use fuel the same way microwaves do, and also be able to produce something similar to thermal waste, that is dumped into the cold space. Though it is impossible to see vacuum, we scientifically assume that there are photons present that are paired without any electromagnetic field. In the paper, bold claims have been made that relate to the cosmos as a whole. The claims suggest that the vacuum present, is energy in the universe that is created by the out of phase photons. Because of this, when they form inside the engine, it’s not possible for anything to come out.

The claims showed that it doesn’t only depend on fundamental physics but the shape of the EM Drive also plays an important role. The drive has a truncated con like structure that is able to produce thrust, which is in the order of close to 100 micro newton, due to the magnetron. NASA for several years now has been studying the drive. The technology is yet to under its first peer review test. The researchers looked at the possibility of sending humans to the planet Mars for 70 days. This will give a chance for the models of the engine to be studied more keenly. 

This will give the technicians a chance to make different models of the engine. Annila adds that the paired photon can be measured and detected by an interferometer. The device is also used to detect gravitational waves. The measurement though will be difficult to achieve, that is according to the analysis carried by the researchers. This means that the scientists will need to come up with a better drive when making the proposal. This will be both be a logical and a scientific proof that indeed the engine models can work.
